# Sell orders

> Redeem all or part of a holding; units are reserved while Ladder redeems and proceeds are credited once.

To redeem, send `side: "sell"` with the holding and optionally the number of units (default: everything):

```json Request theme={null}
{"side": "sell", "holding_id": "e523bf7b-f7ed-43d5-ba83-c73fcaacfbe6", "units": "20", "client_reference": "HP-SELL-0001"}
```

```json Response (sandbox) theme={null}
{
  "data": {
    "reference": "LPO_979e4ff71edb4d8da546b6214360c3a2",
    "side": "sell",
    "investment_id": "8788a2e2-c071-4a05-8dac-adb40627926a",
    "amount": "1960.0000",
    "currency": "NGN",
    "units": "20.00000000",
    "proceeds": "1960.0000",
    "status": "completed",
    "holding_id": "e523bf7b-f7ed-43d5-ba83-c73fcaacfbe6",
    "customer": {"reference": "cust-ada-001", "name": "", "email": ""},
    "completed_at": "2026-10-11T21:00:14.654543"
  }
}
```

## What the fields mean

* `amount` on a sell is the indicative value at creation: units times the bid price, or units times the price paid when there is no bid.
* `proceeds` is what was actually credited, known at completion.
* `customer` is inherited from the holding's original buy.

## Rules

* Units are reserved while the sell is pending: a second sell can only take what is left (`400 units_unavailable` with `available` and `requested`).
* Live sells wait in `pending_fulfilment` while Ladder redeems; cancel or rejection releases the units and moves no money.
* Completion credits `sell_proceeds` to the wallet exactly once and shrinks or closes the holding (`status: closed` when nothing is left).
* Selling needs an `active` holding (`409 holding_not_active`) that is yours (`404 holding_not_found`).
* A sell never consumes the investment's partner allocation.

`GET /orders?side=sell` lists them separately from buys.
